West Belfast workspace project gets funding boost
Enterprise Minister Barry Gardiner today announced plans for a £373,000 investment to develop new workspace units at Lanark Way in Belfast.
The project, by Impact Enterprises, is the first in the West Belfast and Greater Shankhill area to receive part-funding as part of a potential £21.7 million package under the Government’s Integrated Development Fund (IDF).
Commenting on the development, Mr Gardiner said: “By supporting this project we are contributing to the revitalisation of some of the most deprived parts of the Greater Shankill and West Belfast and creating employment opportunities that will improve the economic prosperity of an area in real need of regeneration. I am confident that the new development will help stimulate business growth and facilitate the creation of successful companies.”
The IDF is providing £110,670 towards the construction of 5920 sq ft of lettable workspace in two new units designed to meet the needs of either expanding companies in the area or new businesses. The International Fund for Ireland, meanwhile, is contributing £166,670 towards the project with Invest NI also providing a further £56,000 of assistance.
The IDF bid prepared by the Joint Working Group (JWG) of the West Belfast and Greater Shankill Task Forces includes a comprehensive package of interventions aimed at tackling core issues such as literacy/numeracy and employability across the entire Task Force area as well as a number of area-specific projects including cultural, tourism and environmental projects.

Tunnel Breakthrough For Belfast Sewers Project
Nearly a mile long and 40 metres below ground, a key section of Belfast's deepest tunnel was completed yesterday as the tunnel boring machine (TBM) made its breakthrough at Duncrue Street. Capable of holding vast overflows of stormwater - up to four million gallons - it will reduce the risk of sewer flooding in the greater Belfast area.
