Belfast to host diabetes and public health conference

A joint conference to highlight the links between public health and diabetes is being organised by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety and Diabetes UK Northern Ireland.

The aim of the conference, which will be held on 9 March in Belfast, is to help health care professionals to prevent diabetes and the complications which arise from it, by raising awareness of current public health strategies.

A spokesperson for the DHSSPS said: “The conference is open to all healthcare professionals who are working in diabetes. It will cover lifestyle issues such as food and nutrition, obesity, physical activity and tobacco and also concentrate on early identification and mental health promotion.”

Speakers at the event will include national and regional experts in the field.

An estimated 40,000 people in Northern Ireland have diabetes and a further 25,000 may have diabetes but are not yet diagnosed.

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes is expected to double by the year 2010.
