Alliance party learn from Scottish sectarian experience

Two Alliance delegations are to visit Scotland next week on a fact-finding mission dealing with sectarianism.

The purpose of the visit, which is being made by party members including leader David Ford, is to see how Scotland has dealt with sectarianism in recent years, and to learn from the Scottish experience.

The first delegation arrived in Edinburgh today to meet with representatives from the churches, Commission for Racial Equality and Donald Gorrie MSP (LibDem), who led the campaign for the introduction of hate crime legislation in Scotland.

On Thursday a second delegation will meet representatives from Glasgow City Council, Strathclyde Police, anti-sectarian organisation Nil By Mouth and Celtic and Rangers Football Clubs.

The following day the party will hold a press conference at party headquarters in Belfast to launch its response to the Government consultation document on community relations, 'A Shared Future'.
