Textile firm sheds 55 jobs

A leading Northern Ireland textile firm has announced it is to shed 55 jobs at two of its plants in the north west.

Adria, which employs more than 1,000 people in the province, blamed a lack of demand for its products.

In a statement issued on Friday, the firm said it couldn't promise further cuts wouldn't be made: "We recognise that, given recent speculation regarding job losses in the textile sector, and particularly the Northwest, this announcement may raise questions regarding the longer term future of the 1,050 people Adria continues to employ in Northern Ireland.

"We are currently reviewing our longer term plans, as we do from time to time. Whilst we can never give guarantees with regard to jobs and employment, Adria’s track record in its commitment to Northern Ireland and particularly Strabane, is a matter of record."
