Catholic school targeted by pipe bombers

A Catholic school in north Belfast has been attacked for the second time in a month after a pipe bomb was left at its front gates.

Army bomb experts were called to the scene at Dominican College in the Fortwilliam area on Thursday evening. The area was subsequently cordoned off as the disposal team dealt with the device.

The bomb, which had fireworks attached to it, was eventually made safe.

Education Minister, Jane Kennedy, hit out at the incident. She said: “I am deeply concerned that a school has, yet again, been the focus of a security alert. This device had the potential to kill and is totally deplorable.

“Leaving a pipebomb, or indeed any device at a school, is totally unacceptable and is an attempt to deny children their basic right to education. It is everyone’s responsibility in our society to make it clear that these attacks are totally unacceptable.”

North Belfast MP, Nigel Dodds also condemned the incident and said those behind such attacks had no support in the local community.
