University buildings set for heritage listing
Student halls of residence, a library and teaching block are among four buildings at the University of East Anglia that are set to achieve listed status.
The buildings have featured in architectural textbooks and are considered to be some of the "most powerful and dramatic of post-war new universities".
The buildings were designed by the major 20th-century architect, Sir Denys Lasdun. The University of East Anglia will be his final major work to be listed despite this being his largest and most personal scheme.
Heritage Minister Andrew McIntosh said: "We plan to list a group of buildings of national significance at the University of East Anglia. They illustrate how post-war British architecture can be innovative and elegant, but also practical in its approach to design and living. The best of post-war architecture deserves listing in the same way as their older counterparts."
The distinctive 'Ziggurat' accommodation blocks, known as the Norfolk and Suffolk Terraces, built between 1964 and 1968, are proposed for Grade II* listing. The library, completed 1972, and 'Teaching Wall', completed 1970, are proposed for Grade II listing.
Local people and interest groups now have the chance to tell the Minister whether they believe the buildings merit the extra protection that listing provides. This public consultation ends on 10 October 2003.
The decision to list the structures was taken on the advice of English Heritage.

Minute's Silence Held For Tunisia Attack Victims
A national one minute of silence was held today at 12pm as a mark of respect to those who died in a terrorist attack in Tunisia last week. Flags will also be lowered to half-mast at government buildings, military bases and embassies. Buckingham Palace will also fly its flag at half mast for an official day of mourning.

Teenager Shot Dead Outside London Convenience Store
The teenager shot dead in a supermarket in south-east London yesterday was an innocent bystander. The victim, thought to be 18, was shot at the Costcutter store on Camberwell Road, Walworth, on Wednesday. Police were called to the scene at 9.41pm after an emergency call saying a man had been shot.

Man Dies In Blackpool Hotel Fire
One man has been killed and five other people have been injured in a fire at a hotel in Blackpool. Twelve fire crews were called to the Manor Hotel on the Central Promenade around 3:30am on Monday when the fire broke out in the four-storey building.

Post-Mortem On UEA Lake Body 'Inconclusive'
Police in East Anglia have said that results from a post-mortem on the body of woman found floating in a university lake are "inconclusive". An angler reported the body on Thursday morning, and the police have been unable to identify the victim. All students, staff and visitors of the University of East Anglia (UEA) have been accounted for.

Co-op Bank Purchase Falls Through
A Llyods Banking Group sale of 632 bank branches to the Co-op group has fallen through. It had been hoped that by buying the branches the Co-op would create a bigger competitor to the main high street banks. However, the continued economic downturn and tougher regulatory environment imposed on banks has been blamed for the collapse of the sale.
