Fire service allocated £132m for new equipment
The Fire and Rescue Service will get £132 million over three years to provide brigades with new equipment to help them deal with major incidents, the government has announced.
The investment will fund modern search and rescue equipment such as heavy lifting gear, search cameras and high volume water pumps. This will improve brigades' capacity to respond to incidents involving collapsed buildings, the government says. The funding will also lead to the creation of a central command control and training infrastructure.
Fire Service Minister Nick Raynsford said: "The provision of this equipment is to improve the capability of the fire and rescue service. It is not in response to a specific threat but in line with our commitment in the Fire White Paper to ensure that the fire and rescue service is properly equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
"We are already doing a great deal to ensure that the Fire and Rescue Service can respond effectively to a wide range of incidents. Today's announcement will strengthen our abilities still further, building on the £56 million for New Dimension we announced last year."
The New Dimension Programme was launched in 2002 to review fire and rescue service preparedness against a potential terrorist threat. Some £56 million has already been allocated to Phase One.
The investment is being funded from the previously announced Capital Modernisation Fund allocations and from ODPM resources.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

Fire costs economy £7.7 billion
Fire cost the economy in England and Wales £7.7 billion in 2003, according to a new report. 'The Economic Costs of Fire' report found that direct losses from fire – such as death, injury, absence and damage to property – amounted to £3.3 billion.

New 'modernising' fire service bill unveiled
The Fire and Rescue Services Bill - the first substantial piece of legislation to modernise the service in 50 years – has been published today. The Bill, which is designed to modernise fire service, will place a greater emphasis on prevention work by creating a new duty for fire and rescue authorities to promote fire safety.
