Kelly McBride fails in by-election bid

The sister of a murdered Belfast teenager has failed in her bid to win a seat in Parliament following a London by-election last night.

But while Kelly McBride secured just 189 votes in yesterday's by-election for the constituency of Brent-East, she claimed her campaign had been a success as her brother's murder had now been brought to heart of political debate in Britain.

Ms McBride's brother, Peter, was shot dead by two soldiers in the New Lodge area of Belfast in September 1992.

His killers, Mark Wright and James Fisher, both jailed for life in 1995, were released three years later.

Their subsequently re-admittal into the British Army eventually led to Ms McBride's decision to run in Thursday's election in a bid to highlight the issue and to have the reinstatement to active service overturned.

Last night's by-election was eventually won by Liberal Democrat candidate, Sarah Teather who topped the poll by more than 1,100 votes.

Immediately after her success, Ms Teather said she would be raising the McBride case in the House of Commons.
