Travel warning issued over Hurricane Isabel

The Foreign Office has issued a travel warning to people considering travel to the east coast of the United States, ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Isabel on Thursday.

The hurricane – which has prompted the Governor of Virginia to declare a state of emergency – is expected to reach the eastern coast sometime between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

Adverse weather conditions could also affect North and South Carolina (particularly in coastal areas) and there is a possibility that those living in inland areas could be affected by utilities shortages and flooding.

A number of US government and aid organisations are working to reduce the possible impact of the hurricane on citizens and the country's infrastructure, the Foreign Office said.

Isabel – a Category 2 Hurricane – is moving toward the US coastline at around 9mph and its winds have topped 110mph. US meteorological services warn of large ocean swells and dangerous surf conditions are likely over portions of the Eastern Seaboard and the Islands of the Bahamas over the next few days.

British nationals planning to travel to the United States are strongly recommended to follow events closely and to keep a regular check of travel advice updates.
