Arsonists target DPP member in Co Derry

Arsonists have targeted an independent member of the district policing partnership in Londonderry.

A car belonging Marian Quinn, from Coshowen in Galliagh, had a breeze block thrown through the front windscreen of her vehicle before being set alight in the early hours of Wednesday morning. A petrol container was later found on the back seat of the car by the fire service.

Commenting on this latest of threat's on DPP members, Vice Chairman of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, Denis Bradley, said: “Once again we are condemning the actions of a mindless few who have threatened those who have come forward to serve their community as any good, honest and decent citizen would.

“I have met with the Security Minister as I wanted to convey to her the Policing Board’s concerns in relation to the current spate of threats being made against DPP members. It was a fruitful and productive meeting and I came away reassured that the situation was being given the priority it deserved.”

West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty, also condemned the attacks, describing them been as an "extremely traumatic experience" for all those affected.

“Such acts of intimidation are completely unjustifiable. Those responsible, devoid of any support or coherent political strategy, are merely involved in squalid effort to undermine the peace process," he added.

The attack on Mrs Quinn's car is just the latest in a number of attacks on members of the DPP.

So far, two people have resigned their posts following intimidation from republican elements.
