£20m earmarked to improve Iraq's 'life-line' services
The government is to channel £20 million into southern Iraq to improve 'life-line' service delivery to the region's estimated five million inhabitants.
The money will be used for equipment and spare parts, including mobile generators, repairs and refurbishment of pipelines.
International Development Minister Hilary Benn said: "The Iraqi infrastructure has faced years of neglect and underinvestment, and more recently has been subject to sabotage and looting.
"As a result progress on the restoration of essential services has been slow. This assistance will give a boost to efforts to get these important services up and running consistently for Iraqis living and working in southern Iraq."
The fund is the latest allocation from the £210 million committed to Iraq by the Department for International Development. The project will be implemented by the Coalition Provisional Authority.

British soldier dies in Basrah helicopter crash
A British soldier has died after an RAF helicopter crashed in southern Iraq today. The MoD confirmed that the soldier was killed in "an accident" involving an RAF Puma helicopter at Basrah International Airport. Two other British military personnel were injured during the incident.

Extra £100m pledged for Iraq
The Foreign Secretary has announced that the UK Government will provide an extra £100 million to be spent on rebuilding Iraq. Mrs Beckett said: "This brings our total humanitarian and reconstruction support for Iraq's reconstruction to £744 million or $1.5 billion.

£6m job creation scheme for southern Iraq launched
A government-backed £6 million scheme has been launched to created jobs in southern Iraq. The Department for International Development's (DfID) Southern Iraq Employment and Services Programme (SIESP) aims to provide 1.75 million days of employment throughout the four southern provinces in Iraq by the end of 2004.

RAF Drop Aid In Northern Iraq On Second Attempt
The RAF has successfully dropped a second round of aid supplies into northern Iraq after abandoning an attempt over safety fears. The RAF had attempted to make the drop on Monday but the pilot aborted the mission at the last minute as a large crowd had gathered at the drop site.
