Country star Johnny Cash dies

Legendary country star, Johnny Cash, has died from complications brought on by diabetes, in Nashville, Tennessee.

The 71-year-old star became an iconic figure in the country genre, thanks to his trademark gruff, growling vocals and all-black outfits, which earned him the nickname, 'The Man in Black'. His 45-year career spawned a number of classic hits, including 'Ring Of Fire, 'Don't Take Your Guns To Town', 'A Boy Named Sue' and 'I Walk The Line'. He also released over 70 albums, including two seminal live albums, recorded in Folsom prison and San Quentin, which perfectly suited Cash's outlaw, rebel image. He also won 11 Grammy Awards.

Johnny Cash retired from touring in 1997, but although he was suffering from Shydrager, a condition similar to Parkinson's Disease, which attacks the nervous system and affects muscle control, he continued to record albums. He found a whole new audience with his series of 'American Recordings' albums, on which he covered songs by modern artists, such as Depeche Mode, U2 and Nick Cave.

This year, his video for his cover of the track 'Hurt' by industrial band Nine Inch Nails, received much acclaim and received six nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Cash is survived by four daughters and one son. His wife, fellow country musician, June Carter Cash, with whom he recorded many songs, died in May this year, following heart surgery.
