Silverlink trains halted by brake problem

Train operator Silverlink County Trains have withdrawn its entire fleet of Class 321 trains over safety concerns about a fault discovered in the braking system.

A statement said that no Silverlink County Trains would run on Thursday following a precautionary examination carried out overnight on the affected trains. On “safety grounds”, Silverlink said it had immediately withdrawn the entire fleet for further examination of part of the train braking gear. As a consequence, Silverlink County was unable to operate any train services today between Birmingham - Northampton - Milton Keynes - Watford and London Euston.

However, the company confirmed that the local services between Watford and London Euston plus Silverlink Metro services would be unaffected.

This morning’s statement issued by Silverlink said: “Arrangements are being made for bus replacement services along the route. Virgin Trains will be calling to collect Silverlink County customers every half an hour from Rugby / Milton Keynes / Watford to Birmingham and London and in addition will accept Silverlink County customers holding Silverlink only tickets on their trains from Milton Keynes and Watford.

“Thameslink Rail and Chiltern Rail will accept Silverlink County customers on their trains as well”.

”The current checks on the train fleet is precautionary and at this point in time we are awaiting further technical detail and opinion before deciding how the trains can be returned to service”.
