Safety seminar highlights construction dangers
New figures from the Health and Safety Executive of Northern Ireland (NSENI) have revealed that 47 people have died from construction-related accidents in the province in the last ten years.
The figures were released to coincide with two awareness seminars, one of which begins today, which aim to highlight the danger of carrying out work at heights.
Speaking before today's event at Belfast City Hall, Ken Logan, Head of HSENI’s Construction Group, said: “Falls from heights are the principal cause of fatal and major injury accidents within the construction industry. Consequently, it is essential that everyone involved play an active part in raising safety standards.
"In today’s climate, it is vitally important that construction firms attend these events. The information delivered could lead to the saving of a life or serious injury”.
Other speakers at today's seminar included Donal Rogan, Policy Procedure Manager of Building Control Service, Belfast City Council and Malcolm Downey and Dr Delia Skan of HSENI. Topics covered ranged from health and safety basics to occupational health issues in the construction industry.
The seminars are being held by HSENI in conjunction with Belfast City Council and Derry City Council Building Control Departments.

Home Safety And Crime Prevention Event At Belfast City Hall
A free home safety and crime prevention advice event is to be held at Belfast City Hall on Friday, 01 March. The Belfast Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) has organised the event, which is free and will take place from 10am-1pm in Belfast City Hall. Complimentary tea, coffee and refreshments will also be provided.

Significant Progress Made On £1bn Belfast Region City Deal
Belfast City Council has announced that significant progress has been made on the £1 billion Belfast Region City Deal. Planning has been approved for Newtownabbey's Factory of the Future sit at Global Point and the contract for pre-construction has been awarded for this key component of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre.

Local companies have thrown their weight behind the European Health & Safety Week to raise awareness of the danger of working at heights on construction sites. The safety initiative comes in the wake of incidents in which two men tragically lost their lives as a result of falls.
