Makro to create 250 jobs in north west

Around 250 jobs are to be created in Londonderry, a major UK wholesale cash and carry operator announced today.

Makro, which has 30 purpose built Cash and Carry stores in Northern Ireland, plans to build a complex at the Du Pont site in Londonderry as part of its plans it establish a customer base in the north west.

Welcoming the announcement, SDLP leader Mark Durkan said the news provided a timely and significant boost to the local economy.

He added: "I have just been part of a delegation from Derry's Civic Regenration Forum to meet with the Finance Minister, Ian Pearson, to discuss the economic crisis locally.

"The broadly positive tone of this meeting needs to be matched by broad and deep action from the Government to halt the economic decline and sow the seeds of recovery.

"Today's announcement is a step in the right direction. There are many more steps that need to be taken."

Makro currently employs 7,500 staff across the UK and has an annual turnover of more than one billion pounds.
