Three questioned as woman dies in riverboat sinking

Three people questioned after a woman died when a riverboat capsized and sank on the River Severn have been released on bail.

The small pleasure boat was packed with 15 people when the craft foundered at around 10pm on Saturday evening during a carnival in Stourport-on-Severn marina.

West Mercia police, investigating the sinking of the 23ft pleasure craft, are currently questioning two men and a woman.

The woman, who is understood to be from the area and in her 40s, was trapped underwater in the forward cabin of the boat.

She was rescued from the boat, but died later at Worcester Hospital without regaining consciousness. The 14 other passengers were treated for shock or minor injuries.

Vessels were on the river were celebrating the Stourport Land and Water Carnival.

It is understood that the people on the stricken craft, Sweetie Pie, had apparently ignored earlier warnings that the boat was overcrowded and was in danger of sinking.
