NI men more aware of cancer dangers

New figures have revealed that Northern Ireland men are becoming more aware about the dangers poised by prostate and testicular cancers.

Qualitative analysis by Action Man, the award-winning men's cancer campaign run by Action Cancer in association, revealed that following a 2003 campaign by the group, which ran throughout June, NI men better recognition the symptoms of such cancers and possess a greater willingness to take positive action when concerns arise.

Liz Atkinson, Action Cancer's Director of Services, said: "A major indicator that NI men are really learning about prostate and testicular cancers and, moreover, that they are actively applying this knowledge to their own experience, is the change in the nature of the calls to our help-line.

"In the past, these tended to be broad fact-finding exercises for men but this year the majority of callers have been ringing to discuss symptoms they are experiencing and their questions demonstrate a good understanding of these cancers."

According to Action Man, appointments to their clinic during June and July were up by almost 35% on the same period last year, with the result that they had to provide six additional clinics to cope with demand. Crucially, these clinics are being attended by men from all over the province and of all ages.

"All these factors are important evidence that NI men are abandoning the traditional 'I'd rather not know' stance - a major barrier to early detection and the cause of many needless deaths - in favour of a much more pro-active 'let's find out' attitude," Liz added.
