Westlink Reopens Following Alert

The Westlink has reopened following an earlier security alert, police have said.

Earlier this morning, a suspicious object was found in the Cullingtree Road area. The discovery caused a two-mile section of the road in Belfast to close in both directions and an army bomb squad was sent to the scene.

A number of homes were evacuated, and police have said there is major traffic disruption in the area, with delays on the Falls Road, Shaftesbury Square, Great Victoria Street and Howard Street areas.

The alert has been condemned by SDLP Councillor Tim Attwood who said: "This alert – one of a number in recent weeks – will cause massive disruption for everyone; especially now that the remainder of schools are back.

"There is simply no place for this type of disruption. Society has moved on and nobody wants this madness in their community. People are fed up with this type of disruption and just want to get on with their lives in peace."
