Five Arrested Over Papal Terror Alert
The Metropolitan Police has today reported that five men are being held in a central London police station in relation to a potential threat to Pope Benedict XVI.
The arrests of the men, not believed to be British nationals, were made in London at 5.45am after counter-terrorism officers received intelligence of a possible threat. Searches are continuing at the addresses connected to the raids.
A statement from Scotland Yard, said that the men had been arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2000. Officers from the force's Counter-Terrorism Command carried out the arrest.
Searches are continuing.
Earlier, the Pope attended an assembly of children at St Mary's University College were he led a gathering of 4,000 young people.
Ahead of his arrival in Twickenham, a number of people gathered to protest against the Pope's stance on gay rights, equality and birth control.
The Church sees this visit as an opportunity to celebrate the work of more than 2,000 Catholic schools across the UK, in partnership with the state.
Yesterday, around 70,000 people attended the open-air Mass in Bellahouston Park in Glasgow.

Eight Men Arrested Following Dawn Raids
Over 100 police officers have carried out a series of raids concerning child sexual exploitation offences in Oxford. Eight men were arrested following the raids at 6am this morning 2 June. Police are investigating approximately 60 offences in connection with the operation relating to female victims in Oxford between 1999 and 2007.

Two million expected to pay tribute to the Pope
Around two million people are expected to flock to Rome to pay tribute to the late Pope John Paul II, ahead of his funeral, which will take place on Friday morning. The body of the 84-year-old pontiff, who died on Saturday, will lie in state from this afternoon at St Peter's Basilica and members of the public will be able to pay their respects.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby will meet Pope Francis in Rome next month. The visit, from 14th to 16th June, will focus on the joint modern slavery and human trafficking initiative launched by Archbishop Justin and Pope Francis earlier this year.
