NI's Dole Queue Lengthens

The number of people claiming unemployment benefit in remains on the up despite the equivalent figures falling elsewhere in the UK.

The seasonally adjusted figure shows that in August, 57,800 people were registered as unemployed - an increase of 900 on the previous month. This was proportionately the highest monthly increase in the 12 UK regions, where, as a whole a monthly increase of just 0.2% was reported.

Over the year, the number of people claiming unemployment benefit in Northern Ireland has increased by 5,600 - an increase of 10.7%, while in the rest of the UK, over the same period, unemployment fell by 8.5%.

Drop In Number Of People Claiming Unemployment Benefits
The number of people claiming unemployment benefits in Northern Ireland has dropped to 38,700, a decrease of 500 over the month. New figures released for the period September to November 2015 show that the Northern Ireland Labour Force Survey unemployment rate was 5.9%, a drop of 0.1% over the quarter.

NI Unemployment Up 6% Last Month
A further 2,200 people were made redundant in the Province last month, according to government figures published today. The 6.1% increase in unemployment was similar to that experienced in December, when 2,100 individuals lost their jobs. Northern Ireland fell below the UK average for jobs losses in January, which stood at 6.4%.

New figures from the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency, have revealed a "marginal decrease" in unemployment for the period October – December, 2015.
