Figures Reveal Drop in UK Unemployment

The number of unemployed people in the UK fell by 8,000 to 2.47 million in the three months to July, the latest figures have revealed.

However, the figures from the Office of National Statistics also revealed that the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance increased by 2,300 between July and August 2010 to reach 1.47 million - the first monthly increase since January 2010.

The figures showed that the number of people in employment increased by 286,000 to 29.16 million this quarter, but the ONS said that this was largely due to an increase in part-time workers, the number of which increased by 166,000, compared to 121,000 full-time workers.

The ONS suggested that this could be due to more people classed as "economically inactive", such as students, taking on part-time work.

The number of economically inactive people fell by 158,000 over the quarter to 9.26 million. The ONS said this was mainly due to a drop of 107,000 in the number of students not active in the labour market, falling to 2.19 million.

Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Yvette Cooper, said that the figures were "worrying". She said: "These figures show it is a foolhardy time to make such big cuts. Although we saw a very welcome drop in overall unemployment and an increase in jobs up until July, the most recent figures are more grim.

"For the first time since the turn of the year claimant unemployment went up in August, and the number of vacancies has also dropped significantly. And this is even before the major cuts take hold. Clearly the economy is not out of the woods yet.

"Cutting support for jobs and help to get the unemployed back to work right now is reckless and destructive, and will end up costing us all more."
