George Michael Jailed For Eight Weeks

Pop singer George Michael has been jailed for eight weeks after he admitted crashing his Range Rover while driving under the influence of cannabis.

The 47-year-old - real name Georgios Panayiotou - was arrested after being found slumped in his vehicle after it had crashed into a branch of Snappy Snaps in Hampstead, north London, on July 4.

He was taken to Hampstead police station, where two cannabis joints were found in his possession.

Michael pleaded guilty to driving while unfit through drugs and possessing the two joints last month.

He had previously been convicted of driving while through drugs, following an incident in October 2006. He received a two-year driving ban and a sentence of 100 hours of community service for that incident.

At sentencing at Highbury Magistrates Court in London, Judge John Perkins told him that a jail sentence was inevitable due to his previous conviction.

Michael is expected to serve four weeks in prison and the rest of the sentence on licence. He has also been banned from driving for five years and received a £1,250 fine. He will also have to pay £100 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
