Woman Charged With Son's Murder

A Co. Durham woman has been charged with the murder of her two-year-old son, whose body she carried into a police station last month. Melanie Ruddell, 39, of Dene View, Castle Eden, had been receiving hospital treatment, following her arrest after she carried the body of her son Christy into Peterlee police station on the morning of August 9. A post-mortem revealed that the toddler had been strangled. Durham Police said that the charge came after they had been given medical clearance to speak to her. Mrs Ruddell appeared before magistrates at Peterlee on Friday. The case has been referred to Newcastle Crown Court for a further hearing.

Man Seriously Injured In Stockport Collision

A man has been seriously injured in a collision in Stockport. The incident happened shortly after 5pm on Thursday, when a Ford Mondeo and a Honda motorcycle collided in Gregg Street. The 37-year-old motorcyclist suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition. No-one else was injured in the collision. Woman Sexually Assaulted In Manchester

Police are appealing for information after a woman was sexually assaulted in Manchester city centre. The incident happened around 3am on August 11 in Picadilly Gardens, when a 31-year-old woman was attacked by a man who sexually assaulted her while performing a sex act. He was disturbed by security staff and ran off. The attacker is described as Asian, 6ft tall, aged around 30, with shoulder-length black hair. Police Investigate Elderly Man Found Seriously Injured In Coventry
Police are continuing to investigate after an elderly man was found with serious injuries in Coventry. It is understood that a 75-year-old man was found lying in Binley Road at the junction with Far Gosford Street in Stoke around 10.45pm Friday 25 September.

Seven Injured In Police Van Collision
A police van transporting a suspect has collided with a car in Sheffield, injuring seven people. South Yorkshire Police say the incident, which happened on Abbeydale Road at about 23:30 on Sunday, involved a police van and a red Peugeot 207.

Woman Seriously Injured By Horse-Drawn Tram
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has launched an investigation after a woman was seriously injured after being run over by a horse-drawn tram on Monday. The accident happened at the Middleton Railway Festival of Transport in Leeds when a groom leading four horses at the head of the restored tram became trapped under its wheels.
