Union Aims To Save Up To 500 Jobs At JTI
North Antrim DUP MP Ian Paisley has welcomed the proposal put forward by Unite the union, which aims to save up to 500 jobs at the JTI Gallahers factory in Ballymena.
The DUP MP has worked closely with representatives from the factory since 876 jobs were notified of the company decision to consider closure option.
Mr Paisley said: "The announcement from JTI that nearly 900 jobs would be lost from the Ballymena site was a body blow to the town. Immediately following this I took union representatives to Stormont to meet with the First Minister and the Economy Minister.
"I also have been prepared to travel to Geneva or Japan if necessary to meet with senior representatives of the company and seek any possibility to soften the impact of such a devastating blow.
"I welcome this latest proposal from Unite to see the factory become a 'centre of excellence' for pouch tobacco and cigar production. They are detailed proposals which do include significant cost saving measures and therefore will require detailed analysis by the both company and union members."

Offshore Company Axes Jobs
Around 150 jobs in Aberdeen and Dundee have been axed after an offshore services company ceased trading. Oceanteam Power and Umbilical has been forced to close when the firm's holding company withdrew its financial support. Staff are based in Aberdeen, at workshops in Dundee and offshore.
