Irish Rail Union Members Announce Strike Action
SIPTU members in Irish Rail will launch a campaign of industrial action and participate in a one-day work stoppage if the transport company carries out a threat to cut workers wages on Sunday 24 August.
The industrial action is scheduled to begin on Sunday 24 August, with workers implementing a 'work to rule' action. This will be followed by a 24-hour work stoppage beginning at 12.01 a.m. on Monday 25 August.
SIPTU Utilities and Construction Organiser, Owen Reidy, said: "Our members have on four occasions rejected proposals that have included further pay cuts. However, the management of Irish Rail has threatened to implement reductions in workers' pay from 24th August.
"Our members in Irish Rail voted in early June in favour of taking industrial action if management attempted to force through further cuts to their pay. This industrial action can include 24 hour and 48 hour work stoppages."

Government offices hit by strike action
Strike action by civil service union members in an ongoing dispute over pay has been condemned by government who have called for staff to return to work. Many government offices will remain closed today as industrial action by up to 20,000 Northern Ireland civil servants forced many offices to be shut down.

Industrial Trouble Hits Transport And Retail
Workers on a ferry serving Cape Clear Island in west Cork yesterday staged a second day of strike action. While Tesco staff separately moved to industrial action, the workers on the Naomh Ciaran II are striking in protest at pay cuts ranging from 22% for deckhands to 27% for the ship's master.

Work Placement Rollout For Republic's Schools
Irish Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan has announced an FÁS Work Placement Programme for the State's schools. The programme will allow schools to apply to take on one or more people for a work experience placement for 25-40 hours a week. The placement period is for a minimum of two months and a maximum of nine months.
