Unions To Meet Mondelez Over Job Cuts

Management at Mondelez Ireland are to meet with union representatives today to begin discussions about job cuts announced on Thursday.

The company, which owns the Cadbury chocolate and the Trident chewing gum brand, announced yesterday that more than 200 jobs in Dublin and Co Kerry are to be cut.

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Dara Calleary, described the job losses as a "major setback".

"(Yesterday's) announcement is a serious blow and will have a really negative impact on the local economy in Kerry and Dublin. It is a difficult time for workers and their families along with the wider community that relies on these jobs. I hope that staff and management at Mondelez can come to an agreement to protect as many jobs as possible," Deputy Calleary said.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Unite Regional Coordinating Officer Richie Browne said: "We knew that the company were reviewing their production operation and they told us that before Christmas.

"The result of that was made known in the announcement yesterday. But we were certainly not expecting the scale of what was announced."
