New Passport Card Introduced

A new credit-card sized passport is to be issued as a supplement to the current Irish passport.

The new card will cost €35, be valid for five years and will include the carriers name, date-of-birth, passport number and a number of security features, such as an embedded hologram photo.

A new app has also been released that allows people to apply for the new card and includes a feature that will take a photograph that meets international standards.

Introducing the new card, Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan said it will be particularly useful for young people who use their passport as identification, "especially on nights out".
