Private Rental Report Says Rent Control Detrimental
An independent report commissioned by the Private Residential Tenancies Board, to look at the private rental sector, has advised against rent control.
The report says that rather than help disadvantaged tenants, rent control could discourage investors and actually reduce the number of rental units available.
Compiled by DKM consultants, the report says that around half of landlords claim that rents are not currently covering their mortgages and around a third wish to sell their properties.
The report suggests that landlords being given tax relief on their mortgages to take on rent-supplement tenants.
It offered a range of options, including long-term leases with rents linked to the consumer price index.
National housing charity Threshold has dismissed the reports findings.
