NISRA Publish Northern Ireland Construction Bulletin
The latest edition of the Northern Ireland Construction Bulletin has been published by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).
The bulletin provides a general measure of change in real terms in the output of the Construction Industry in Northern Ireland.
The key findings of the report include:
• The total volume of construction output in Northern Ireland in the final quarter of 2013 decreased by 3.7% compared to Q3 2013 and was 7.6% lower compared to the same quarter in 2012.
• The volume of Overall Construction Output in Northern Ireland has decreased in two of the last four quarters.
• The sub-sectors of construction output experienced contrasting growth patterns in Q4 2013. New Work decreased by 6.1% but Repair & Maintenance increased by 2.0%. Similarly, Other Work and Housing fell by 10.4% and 7.8% respectively but Infrastructure increased by 7.0%.
• In Q4 2013, Great Britain experienced a third successive quarter of positive growth with overall construction output increasing by 0.2% compared to the previous quarter.
• In Q4 2013, construction output in Northern Ireland was three-quarters (75%) of the average output reported for 2010. In the same quarter, overall construction output in Great Britain was at 98% of the average output for 2010.
The published results are primarily used by National Accounts in the calculation of the output measure of UK Gross Domestic Product. The results are also used by Northern Ireland Government Departments, Economists, Construction Industry Analysts and Academics to understand the state of the construction sector in Northern Ireland and the wider Northern Ireland economy. NI Builders Facing Deepening Crisis
There has been a continuing downturn in the NI construction sector as builders in Northern Ireland struggle to manage the recession. Even before this week's Comprehensive Spending Review and expected cutbacks in Executive spending on new building projects, the latest figures have showed a 5.7% decrease in output during the past quarter.
