Woman Dies After Mayo Mountain Fall

A woman who fell while climbing in the Mweelrea mountains in Co Mayo yesterday evening has died.

Search teams in the Mweelrea Mountains in Co Mayo were called to the scene where the woman, who is in her 30s, fell on Ben Bury peak at around 6.30pm yesterday evening. A spokesperson for Mayo Mountain Rescue said she was found about 70 feet from where she fell.

Her body has been taken to Mayo General Hospital where a postmortem will be carried out.

A man who was with the woman when she fell was taken to safety at around 1am this morning.

Colm Byrne from Mayo Mountain Rescue said the search operation went on through the night.

It is the 14th callout for the Mayo Mountain Rescue Team this year alone.

Last month, the team were forced to airlift a young female who got into difficulties on Croagh Patrick during a descent of the mountain. The helicopter was mobilized due to concerns about her deteriorating condition. She was airlifted off the mountain to Mayo General Hospital.
