Fine Gael Accuse Government Of Transport Faiure

The Fine Gael deputy leader has hit out at the Government's Transport Strategy, which he said is a “failure”.

Richard Bruton TD claims 75% of new commuters take the car and said that, at the halfway stage, the Government has failed to deliver on its ambition.

Mr Bruton also claimed the use of public transport has actually fallen by 3%, not increased by 11% as was envisaged and that the number of people cycling has fallen by over 20%.

"These facts, which are revealed by an analysis of the Census, demonstrate the abject failure of this Government to deliver an effective transport strategy even when resources were plentiful.

"Dublin Transport policy has been a shambles for the past decade. It has totally lacked coherent leadership.

"Low cost initiatives like extra buses and car sharing have been sidelined. Projects have been hopelessly mismanaged. The scope for competition has been ignored.”

Last week, Dublin Bus announced they are to increase their Dublin services after the collapse of the Circle Line Service.

A spokeswoman for Fianna Fail said: "This news from Dublin Bus will be a great relief to commuters who were reliant on the Circle Line service and were left high and dry as a result of the withdrawal of services."
