SIPTU Achieves Breakthrough Over Dispute

Union officials representing aircraft handlers say they are close to finding resolution over a major ongoing dispute.

SIPTU - representing the aircraft workers - believes it has identified a mechanism that can resolve the current impasse and have convinced management to enter into talks.

Union officials have met with representatives of aircraft handlers, whose rejection of a work reform package has sparked the crisis.

Aircraft handlers operate the tow trucks, which move aircraft.

On Wednesday the task of supervising refuelling was added to their section of the work practice reform deal currently being put to all 1,200 workers workers at SR Technics.

This prompted rejection of the deal on Friday, the suspension of a critical contract with Aer Lingus and the imposition of a Tuesday deadline by the airline to resolve the matter.

A spokesperson for SR Technics said that management is available to talk with SIPTU once the workers are briefed by the union.
