Revenue Commissioners Appoint New Head

The Irish government has appointed the first female Chairman of the Revenue Commissioners.

Josephine Feehily will take over the job on 13 March, following the retirement of the current Chairman, Frank Daly.

Ms Feehily has been a Revenue Commissioner since 1998, and is currently responsible for the Large Cases and Collector General's Division, as well as Policy, Legislation and International matters relating to Tax and Customs.

Born in Clarina, Co Limerick, Ms Feehily is a career public servant who has previously worked in the Department of Social and Family Affairs, the Pensions Board and the Labour Relations Commission.

Cigarettes Seized In Laois
Revenue Commissioners have seized between eight and nine million contraband cigarettes in Co. Laois. It is understood that the cigarettes, which were valued at €3 million, were found in a container, which was wrongly delivered to an address in Durrow. It is believed that the container came from Spain and passed through Dublin Port.

Supreme Court Upheld Judgement In Favour Of Revenue Commissioners
The Supreme Court has ruled in favour of the Revenue Commissioners, following a review of its case against Ronan McNamee. The case involved a judicial review of the process Revenue deployed in challenging transactions under the general anti-avoidance legislation, contained in section 811 of the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997.

PAYE Taxpayers Urged To Check Any Entitlement To Refund
PAYE taxpayers have been urged to check it they might be entitled to a refund of some of the income tax they have paid in the past four years. Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Finance Michael McGrath made the call after it emerged that over €3.4 billion has been refunded to taxpayers since 2010.
