Plans To Sell Social Housing Unit With 60% Reduction 'Unacceptable'
The government's proposal to offer a 60% discount in the sale of social housing units has been described as "unacceptable" and a "move to further separate the state from housing provision and would lead to housing shortages into the future", according to Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis.
Deputy Ellis said: "Social housing provided by the local authorities gives low income and poor families one of their only hopes for affordable adequate accommodation.
"It is particularly disingenuous of the government to announce this as part of its package to deal with the housing crisis. This scheme will do nothing but hinder housing provision.
"The rents raised by local authority housing is over 300 million euro a year. With an adequate social mix social housing can for itself. But selling off social housing for less than half price will help no one.
"This will deplete the stock of social housing, place debt on low income families and hinder the ability of local authorities and the state to tackle housing need into the future.
"The state must commit to major investment in the building and refurbishment of social housing. That is the solution to the housing and homelessness crisis."

Minister Announces €1.5bn Social Housing Plan
Minister for the Environment, Community & Local Government, Alan Kelly T.D. has announced housing targets for each local authority area out to 2017. Over €1.5bn will be invested in a combination of building, buying and leasing schemes by local authorities designed to accommodate 25% of those currently on the housing waiting lists in social housing.

Housing Construction Not Meeting Demand - SF
The latest construction figures show that not enough housing is being built to meet demand, Sinn Féin housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis has said. Deputy Ellis said that the figures show that it is "all the more obvious" that the state must intervene in the housing crisis with major capital investment on an annual basis.

Sinn Féin's opposition to a proposal to build 50 new social housing units in Clondalkin has been described as an "absolutely disgrace and almost beyond belief". Labour TD Robert Dowds accused Cllr Eoin Ó Broin of "complete political cowardice", and that it was people on the housing waiting list that would suffer as a result.

Govt Accused Of Ignoring Scale Of Housing Crisis
The government has been accused of maintaining policy that ensures a "huge" housing shortage, Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has said. Mr Adams also accused the government of failing to "face up" to the scale of the housing crisis, particularly in the Greater Dublin area.
