Taoiseach Announces Replacement For Alan Shatter

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has announced that Frances Fitzgerald, Ireland's first Minister for Children, has been appointed as Minister for Justice, replacing Alan Shatter, who tendered his resignation on Wednesday.

News of the appointment has been welcomed as "a great day for women in politics."

Charlie Flanagan has also been appointed as the new Minister for Children to replace the departing Ms Fitzgerald.

Welcoming the news, Fine Gael TD for Cavan and Monaghan, Heather Humphreys, said: "As a female politician working to get more women involved in politics and positions of leadership, I am delighted that Minister Fitzgerald, has been appointed as the new Minister for Justice, one of the most senior government positions.

"This appointment means that we now have a full team of women in the department of Justice; the Attorney General, the Chief Justice, the DPP and the acting Garda Commissioner.

"As a woman in politics it is fulfilling to see a capable and hardworking politician climb up the ranks and be recognised for the work she has done. More women are needed in politics and Frances Fitzgerald’s career, in particular her appointment today as Minister for Justice, should be testament to other young women that politics is a field in which we can and do excel. It should encourage more women to get involved in politics and to be confident in their ability to take on roles of responsibility and high office.

"Frances Fitzgerald today joins an elite group of women who have taken on the role of Minister for Justice. I am confident that she will do an excellent job as she paves the way for other women to grow and progress in politics."
