Michelin Approved Oregano Is A 'Star'
A Co Antrim restaurant has proved to be worthy of its coveted Bib Gourmand from the prestigious 2010 Michelin Guide, writes Brian McCalden.
A quiet night in early March saw Oregano, near Ballyclare, putting on a meal and a standard of service that was second to none, locally and internationally.
With an accolade just below that of a Michelin 'Star' already under their belt, the restaurateurs celebrated their success by presenting an unannounced reviewer with something really 'special' and a dining experience that rivalled that of London's Le Gavroche or The Savoy, as well as the best of NI establishments.
Although expecting a 'standard' Pre-Theatre Menu 'Special', Catherine and Dermot Regan (pictured) who run the restaurant, did this reviewer proud, as the only new addition to the guide from Northern Ireland, by using local flavours with a modern twist in an informal setting.
The restaurant is situated in a country house set back from the road amidst trees and lawns in Ballyrobert, Co Antrim, on the outskirts of Belfast, near Glengormley.
Head Chef Dermot Regan commented recently: "Catherine and I are delighted to have received the Bib Gourmand from Michelin.
"The hard work, sweat and tears over the past few years have certainly paid off. We feel tremendously proud of the staff at Oregano for their enthusiasm and dedication."
If their theatre menu (both Ballyearl and the new Mossley Mill theatres are just minutes away) is anything to go by, they have indeed much to be 'proud of'.
Two courses, (£15.95) offer superb starters, Confit Duck Leg with Black Bean, Orange and Watercress Salad is one of three with an excellent Caesar Salad and Soup as alternatives.
Main course, (recommended) is lily-white Smoked Haddock with Egg Crust and Curried Orzo Pasta, while there are three other good alternatives, with the Slow Cooked Pork belly and Caramelised Onion Mash, Spinach and Red Wine Jus also very good.
The A La Carte Menu is more extensive, but still very reasonably priced, with mains up to about £16 each.
Three dessert choices on the budget menu are also good, (£2 each extra if selected) and includes Baked Mango or Passion fruit Crème Brulee and Shortbread.
Crucially though, the environment, ambience and service are superb. Although a quiet evening, waiting staff were both discrete and at the same time, were there when needed, without any over-the-top servility.
The house, which dates back to 1902, has a contemporary interior with vibrant modern paintings, high ceilings, walls with striking colours and modern furnishings complementing many of the original features.
The Wine List is good too, although there are few takers for two £75 selections, with most opting to pay around £16 for very good wines.
Overall, get there soon, enjoy the budget or the full menu, and look forward to the award of the full 'Star' next time round. Oregano certainly deserves one.
